The Scale of the Problem

Salamanders and other amphibians, particularly frogs, are widely used for dissections in educational settings around the world. Dissection continues today as much as, if not more than, it did 50 years ago (Hart, Wood, and Hart, 2008). The Johns Hopkins University Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing has estimated that roughly six million frogs alone are used for dissection each year in the United States. When salamanders and other amphibians are included, the number is significantly higher.

Where Do the Animals Come From?

Many of the amphibians used for dissection are collected from wild populations, which contributes to population declines in the areas where they are harvested. Others are raised in breeding facilities where conditions may not meet adequate welfare standards. The collection and transportation of these animals involves significant suffering, as many die in transit from stress, overcrowding, dehydration, or exposure to harmful chemicals used in preservation.

Modern Alternatives

Today, numerous digital and virtual dissection programs are available that provide detailed, interactive, three dimensional models of amphibian anatomy. Studies have consistently shown that students who use virtual dissection tools perform as well as or better than students who perform traditional dissections. These alternatives eliminate the need for animal suffering while also offering advantages such as the ability to repeat procedures and explore anatomy at each student's own pace.

Conservation Impact

Beyond the ethical considerations, the massive demand for dissection specimens has real consequences for wild amphibian populations. At a time when amphibians face unprecedented threats from habitat loss, disease, climate change, and pollution, the additional pressure of commercial collection for educational purposes is difficult to justify when equally effective alternatives are available.
